Comprehensive sleep Solutions is happy to announce that Dr. Philip Eichling has accepted the position of Medical Director for our Tucson labs. His combination of high quality academic medicine and long history of general internal medicine experience gives him a unique patient centered approach to sleep medicine. He will be leading us into fulfilling the promise of a truly “comprehensive” sleep medicine service. He will be supporting his sleep study consultations with availability at his sleep medicine private practice. The following is a short bio for your review:
Dr. Eichling is originally from Chicago where he did graduate work in social ethics at the University of Chicago before going off to New York University for his medical school training. He went from there to Harvard where he received a joint MD/MPH between NYU and Harvard School of Public Health. After medicine residency at Boston City Hospital he came to Arizona with the Public Health Service. He served in the National Health Corps for 3 years and qualified for family practice board certification, in addition to his internal medicine training. He then spent a year at U of Arizona completing his IM residency.
He has practiced 2 years in emergency medicine, one year in international health (Nepal and India) and then 5 years as the only internist for 75 miles in a small rural Oregon hospital. He was department head of medicine for Cigna in Phoenix for 2 years, doing hospital medicine before finally moving to Tucson for good 20 years ago.
In 1988 he took the job of Medical Director for the Canyon Ranch medical department. This was, and is, an optimal health/ preventive medicine practice focusing on preventive cardiology. It has always been affiliated with the U of A and his executive health program is also now affiliated with Cleveland Clinic where is he on the faculty. He headed the preventive medicine residency committee at the University of Arizona for several years and has taught preventive medicine continuously for 20 years to medical students and residents. He is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. Preventive cardiology brought Dr Eichling to sleep medicine 15 years ago when he saw patients with untreated apnea who were unable to make health changes until they became less sleepy. He set up a sleep lab in 1993 at Canyon Ranch. He has continuously been practicing sleep medicine ever since.
From 2000 on he has been practicing at the Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Arizona, in addition to his preventive medicine practice.
He became sleep board certified in 2002 and opened a private practice of sleep medicine in 2005. He is one of the first this year to have recently passed the newly developed sleep board under the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He has published several articles on sleep medicine and has given numerous medical education presentations to both professional and lay audiences.
